Adrian McCarthy
Archaeologist

BA in Archaeology and English, University College Cork

Beginning in 2005, Adrian has worked on a variety of major archaeological projects related to infrastructural projects. He has worked in counties Galway, Laois, Limerick Tipperary and Wexford and a variety of smaller developments in both urban and rural settings. The sites he has excavated on, both as an archaeological assistant and archaeological supervisor, range between Neolithic lakeside ceremonial sites, Early Medieval industrial sites to a 19th century County Gaol. He has significant experience in archaeological testing and monitoring in both wet and dryland environments.

He is particularly interested in the transition between Iron Age and the Early Medieval periods in Ireland , questions around notions of a Celtic identity for Ireland and ringfort settlement. He is interested in promoting the idea that archaeological heritage adds value and of developing community awareness of the history of surroundings.

He has worked briefly at Caherconnell Cashel, Carron, Co. Clare as part of the ongoing research excavation.

Outside of archaeology he has worked as a Bushland Regenerator with Not-For Profit environmental organisation ‘Greening Australia’ in both Brisbane and Melbourne, Australia. This involved promotion of native plant species as a part of habit management, weed control and community engagement.
